RE: ATTENDANCE POLICY – IMPORTANT CHANGES TO HOLIDAY REQUESTS
The Education (Pupil Registration) (England) Regulations 2006 currently allow Head Teachers to grant leave of absence for the purpose of a family holiday during term time in `special circumstances’ for up to 10 school days per year. Head Teachers can also grant extended leave for more than 10 school days in exceptional circumstances. Please note that from 1st September 2013 amendments to the 2006 regulations will come into force. The amendments make clear that Head Teachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are `exceptional circumstances’.
This means that unless there are exceptional circumstances the absence request cannot be authorised. Therefore, any Parent/Carer who does take their child out of school without authorisation could be subject to a £60.00 penalty notice per child, per parent from the Local Authority.
These are National Guidelines that Ofsted will expect us to follow. In consultation with other schools, we will endeavour to make clear exactly what constitutes `exceptional circumstances’. In the meantime, if you have previously taken holidays in term-time, we wanted to inform you that we are unable to authorise any at this present time. We will publish a full amended policy, in line with the guidance, once it has been agreed by the governors.
Your co-operation would be very much appreciated.
