This is a national scheme which aims to provide high quality, exciting and innovative learning activities and experiences outside of normal school hours. At the heart of its work is the ambition to raise aspirations, boost achievement and foster a love of learning, so that young people can make the most of their abilities and interests. For further information about the work of the Children's University please visit http://www.childrensuniversity.co.uk.  It is available for children in years 4 to 6 at Curledge Street Academy

Children's University students use Passports to Learning to record the number of hours of completed Children’s University validated learning activities. The more activities children do, the more the hours add up! Children are encouraged to progress through the national certification scheme. Starting with a Bronze Award for 30 hours of Children’s University Activities, awards go up to a Gold Fellowship Award for 1,000 hours. The 30 hours Bronze Awards can be awarded for one or more activities, but after that children should have at least 5 hours of learning something new for the Silver level and then 10 hours of something new for Gold and all other Awards over 100 hours. Gold certificates are presented at a formal graduation ceremony held at Plymouth University where children will have the opportunity to receive their certificates wearing traditional cap and gown!

Congratulations to the nine children who have been awarded their gold certificates for completing 100 or 200 hours and were presented with them at a graduation ceremony in October 2015..

So far this year,  22 certificates have been presented in assembly and some of the children are well on their way to earning their gold certificates.

School Clubs – For every hour your child spends at a lunch and after school club which is run and organised by the school, your child will receive a stamp.  The hours will be calculated and stamped at the end of each half term so your child will not need to bring their passport every time they attend a club.

Non after school clubs/learning destinations – We want to encourage your child to go to clubs outside of school and the Children’s University does this as well.  Lots of clubs and learning destinations are already linked with the Children’s University.  All you need to do is take the passport to these places and they will sign it.  Some learning destinations in and around Torbay are:-

Paignton Zoo, Living Coasts, Kents Cavern, Dartmoor National Park, Parkfield, Quay Climbing Centre, All Cubs and Scouts across Torbay,  Arsenal Soccer School, Stagecoach Theatre Arts, Newton Abbot Leisure Centre, Torbay Karate Club, Torbay Library Service, Tamar Fencing Club, Create, Cary Park Tennis Club, Shotokan Karate – Kihaku Club, Divers Down, Hunt Fun, PUMA Taekwondo, H2O Swim Academy, Darren Roberts Football Coach, Movie Mania, Torbay Olympic Gymnastic Club, Torquay Academy Sport Football Club and Razamataz are already listed with the Children’s University

If your club isn’t affiliated, then this is not a problem.  Your child will need to get a learning destination nomination form from Mr Brown.  You will need to take it to the person in charge of the club who will need to fill out the form.  The form will then need to be brought back to me and I will send it off to the Children’s University so the club can be verified.

Learning activities – these are any extra activities that your child has done out of class which is education based e.g. baking something, creating a film, writing a story.  This can be brought to either Mr Brown or your class teacher so it can be judged how long it took to do the task and can then logged in your passport. On Wednesday lunchtimes, Mr Brown will be available to log any hours.

If you want your child to be part of Children's University, please pay £2.50 to Mrs Kirby in the office and your passport and information pack will be issued.
