DT Week - Year 6

The Year 5 and 6 children who were not on the residential to PGL joined together to study and take part in activities about robots.  Some of the activities took place at school but they also visited PCSA to take part in other activities led by Mr. McKenna, Mr. Aplin, Miss Julian and Miss Parsons.

This is a diary of DT week written by one Year 6 group.

Monday 2nd March 2015

On Monday we started by going to I.C.T and going on a lego programme. On the programme we made a lego robot.I started off by making a house / robot but then I made a bionicle robot. After we did that we had break.Back in the classroom we made lego in real life and me and Josh made some lego puzzles that you have to twist to solve.

Later on that day we switched groups and we filmed one of the bots with the ipad but it got annoying because Mr Bennet put the same song on over and over again but it was a bit funny.Later on after lunch we went to Mrs Moores class with Mr Shore and made a robotic hand. We used straws, elastic bands, card, string and sellotape. You had to cut off fingers or a finger and a palm of a hand we stuck  the fingers to the palm of the hand with the tape , we creased the fingers then cut up small lengths of straw and stuck them on the hand and threaded a piece of string through the straw which was stuck to the finger then if you pulled the string the finger moved! So thats what we had done on Monday

Tuesday 3rd March

On Tuesday we walked to PCSA and when we got there we were put into groups. Our group was given a paper drawing of part of a robot.I  was are part to cover all the white gaps so it looks nice and not rushed, and we were welcomed by a teacher that works there and he showed us a video of two different robots. When we finish the paper drawing of the robot in are groups we would put it all together to make it look like a huge robot with lots of different colors. It was a bit hard but if you got stuck you would have a teacher to help you, and when we finshed its was part of a robot it was a picture of the body and the head and when are groups finshed the paper robot and the first step was to get a piece of the paper robot, then we would pick are colurs to put on the robot to make it look colurful so it’s not dull and white, and the last thing to do was to put all togther. When we came back from PCSA wecame back to school then we build some lego robots the ones what we made on the computars on monday but if we did not want to make a lego robot,we would make two paper robots on a black piece of paper and it could be any robot you want and you could make the background how ever you would like to.Strate after we build a robot or done a nice picture, then we did some pe with mister walkin we did some gyminastic with him in pe and lots of diffrent streches and jumping two and lots of diffrent thing what were fun to and after pe and then after we went in to class and got all are stuff togther and then we got told to go home then and that what happend on tuesday.

Wednesday 4th March 2015

We started the morning of Wednesday by walking to Paignton Community and Sports Academy. Once we had finished the walk,we were greeted by the staff of the school. After that,we viewed a video of a robot used in the military this electronic could run like a graceful deer. Once we had watched the video,we started to observed our teacher,Mr Mckenna, create the first step of the robot claw. The first step of the hand was already done and if you were lucky so was the second after we finished the second step,we folded a specially designed box. Then crowded around instructor for the next step. The next instruction involved more folding along lines of card. We  kept on bending the card until we had carefully creased all the card.We joined them together with minute pointy skewers and paper fasteners

Eventually, we all packed around a different table and concentrated on Mr Mckenna and learnt to fill up syringes and tubes i found this fatiguing , this was the penultimate step. The next was to connect the syringes and card.

When we returned to school, we were asked to put different films and DVDs in chronological order from its release. This was tiring as our team didn’t understand why we had clues. We finally finished with four points resulting in our team to finish third.

After this we went to I.C.T leading to home time ,where I told my family all about it.
